Joshua Cunniffe was a high school student in Bunbury, Western Australia,
when he experienced a serious bout of depression that extended over more than two years.
Now recovered, he is studying Creative Writing and Advertising at
Curtin University, Perth.
He plays senior A Grade football for North Fremantle in the WA Amateur Football League.
Behind the Smile is the story, in his own words, of a teenager who experienced a
devastating encounter with depression but has emerged from the nightmare to offer
encouragement and help to other young people. Joshua Cunniffe writes:
'My story is not fictional. It is a story of a life of bitterness, confusion,
anger and isolation that I would not wish upon anybody. It pulled me apart and
pushed me to the edge of despair. I know what depression really is: a struggle
that causes great pain and destroys people, a serious mental illness that requires help
and attention. My hope is that this book will be helpful in spreading an understanding
among young people about depression. If it can help just one person, or give just one
little ray of hope, one reason to survive, then I will feel it has all been worthwhile.'
